Mostly out of curiosity, is anyone else having trouble with making random conversation?   It seems like people are either afk all the time or simply don't talk.

Well, it happens. You may not forget, some keep it running or are talking to their friends. Sometimes they don't notice you or just don't want. Also it's a question of what you're saying first. The girls here get 100 invites or "hi" within a few seconds, they only answer if the first words are interesting.
Be patient, say bit more than just hi and look at the profile of the people before you start talking to them. You also can go to the meeting places and talk there. Good luck

I would say dont bother   if they dont talk  ..I am sure there is some  that will  talk .....  next.

I suppose that I'm used to something like red light center where it's more social.  Still puzzles me though that people just seem to stand around all the time....

I'm going to pop back in for a few weeks.  Not sure if I'll stay long term or not.
