Regarding those ideas, I love some of them. As for implementing them, well as long as we respect the original meshes limits (skirt's length, etc), it's possible to be done.
It's a shame though, because some designs would look really cool with longer pieces.

I will use some of your ideas as inspiration and will try to come up with something.
