This is just a little fun game for those of you who would like to participate in it. There is no signing up, no cost, and no rewards. This is just some plain fun I thought would be nice to have for anyone who wants to jump in and participate.
The game I came up with is very simple. I will post a picture of an animal and people will guess what the animal is.
Please keep in mind that I'm looking for the full name of the animal, so if the picture is an elephant, I will not accept the answer "elephant." I would look for more specific like African Elephant or Asian Elephant. Don't worry though I won't make you give Scientific names ;D not everyone is an animal geek like me.
Also, if you know there is more than one name for the animal, please list all the ones you know so the others know and can maybe learn a bit more. One example is this:
Say I get these answers to the picture: Wild Hunting Dog, Hyena, African Painted Dog. The two people are right for the Wild Hunting Dog and African Painted Dog are two names that this animal can be called.
If for some reason it is hard to guess, I will post hints as to what the animal is. It could be location, family, or other hints maybe letters etc.
When someone gets the correct animal name, I will then post some facts about the animal, so everyone can learn a bit about the animals (since I won't see you guys in person at the zoo to tell you lol).
Like I said in the beginning this is just something fun that people can participate in or even just read and learn a little bit of new info about the animal kingdom.
-
We will start off with something simple
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3SjBfIxxJ90/S7XMHntmFbI/AAAAAAAAADE/zcglI6bdmKM/s1600/urso-panda-e-o-filhote-b6bde.jpg)
P.S. If you have a specific animal you would like to be guessed at in the future just pm me a message and I will learn a new animal (if I haven't heard of it before) or tell what I know when it is guessed. If you do suggest an animal though, please refrain from answering as to give the others a chance to guess.
-
My proble is to identify the animal and then get the english name...lol... but love the idea of the game. Translator calls it red panda but im not sure if its enough.
-
I think its a Giant Panda :) I think Red Pandas are smaller and red :)
I love our Forum Village now has a zoo. Great idea Sexi. Fashion Houses, Police Dept, Bar, Newspaper & Zoo :)
-
It is indeed a Giant Panda. Red Pandas look like this Lover
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/da/Red_Panda_Face.jpg)
P.S. would love to be the one holding the red panda ;D although quick tidbit I have gotten to pet one before ;)
-
Sexi, I don't see the red panda, just an animal in front of it :D
That's my problem, translator just gave me red panda.... grummel grummel grummel...
-
The Giant Panda is the bigger of the two pandas. Panda actually means "bamboo eater." Both the Giant Panda and the Red Panda eat quite a bit of bamboo and live in the same general area over near China and some of the surrounding countries. Another thing that both pandas have in common is what is called a "panda thumb." You can kinda see this in the red panda picture. The Panda thumb is actually not a thumb at all but rather just an extension of their wrist bone. They use the panda thumb to actually help hold the bamboo as they are eating it.
Even though they both have the panda in their name, these two animals are not related at all. The Giant Panda is actually in the Ursus (Bear) family while through much debate they currently have the Red Panda placed in its own family (Family Ailuridae) as the Red Panda is so different from all the animals even though it has several characteristics of other animals.
The baby Giant Pandas actually are not as pretty of a baby as many of the other animals. The babies are actually born without their fur so just the pink skin shows, and they are super tiny as well.
Picture of baby Giant Panda
One way that the Giant Panda is different from the other bears is that the Giant Panda does NOT hibernate.
-
hehehehe Lover you just knew that the Red Panda was one of my favorite animals ;D think you were just trying to score some brownie points
-
Can count on me to bring the zoo into the village ;D
Ok so the next animal is a bit harder (mainly cause weekends are busier for me and want to draw some others in as much as possible)
-
I know this animal's name, but not going to post it now because i would like more people to guess it's name, but i'll pm you ;D
Good to have a Zoo here, although i think the Bar looks like one at the moment too with all those furry animals there
-
Muntjac deer?
More exactly: Reeves's muntjac
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reeves's_muntjac
-
Yes it is indeed a Reeve's Muntjac.
Quick story on the Muntjac we have at the zoo (not sure which species haven't seen her graphic sign yet).
I got to help out with that section of animals for one of my practicums and saw her many times in there but never out on exhibit until one day this last week when she was out walking around. I finally got to get a pic of her. This one seems to be a bit more shy around people cause not often she is out visible to be seen. Have to actually look hard to see her and go through the exhibit.
-
The Reeve's Muntjac is native to the China and Taiwan areas but has been introduced into the UK and can be found throughout central England now. There numbers are increasing more and more. They also don't have a certain period for breeding but can do it year round ;D There gestation is a little less than humans for they only have to carry the baby for about 7 months.
-
Our next animal:
-
Asian Elephant?
-
Lol good job :) yes it is an Asian Elephant.
There are a few differences between the African and Asian Elephants and one of those differences are the ears. African Elephants actually have the shape of Africa on their ears. The Asian Elephants also have smaller ears as well.
The Asian Elephant is smaller than the African Elephant. There is also a dip in the Asian Elephants back while the African Elephant has a hump. The Asian Elephant has a couple small humps as well just that it is located on the forehead while the African Elephant has a curved forehead.
The trunk is also different the African has two tips while the Asian only has 1. This way the African can pick up things in its trunk while the Asian just scoops things up.
These are just a few differences that distinguishes these two elephants.

That is the Scientific names and I wasn't going to be mean like that making people give Scientific names ;D so can anyone tell me the common name for the animal?

-
No more animals? :(
-
I think it's feeding time ;D
-
Saola is the correct common name.
This is actually one of the more recent large animals discovered by non native people in the area. The Saola was discovered in 1992. It is located in the forested areas between Laos and Vietnam.
One of the sad things about this animal is that it hasn't been able to survive too well yet in captivity. Hopefully one day we will be able to get things figured out and give this species some extra help in surviving in the world.
Most of the information known about this animal actually comes from one captive animal.
Since the Scientific name was mentioned, the first part (genus) actually refers to it being a false oryx. Oryxes when viewed from the side gives the imagery of a unicorn and in fact is probably the way the legend of the unicorn was created. The second part (species) refers to two provinces the animal is from.
..................
Tango's animal is indeed a Tasmanian Devil.
Even though this animal has a fierce reputation, it actually is a shy and cautious animal. The only times it gets vicious is when the animal is threatened or competing.
Even though this animal is found in Tasmania now, it originally was found on Australia.
-
Since everyone is doing so well in guessing, lets change it up a bit. ;D This next animal I'm just giving a portion of the picture.
-
Zebra or...... maybe ..... Porcupine :)
-
I think Brandy is right, it must be a Zebra
-
Zebra is to easy, i will guess Okapi a realitive of the giraffe family
-
Zebra
-
Great job Jayc :) it is indeed a picture of an Okapi
(http://ts1.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.4876528354462528&pid=1.7&w=183&h=188&c=7&rs=1)
As this picture shows, it has a long tongue just like the giraffes and can get up to about 18 inches. HEHEHE if humans had that long of tongue think the girls will want oral more often. ::) As you can see the long tongue is so long that the Okapi can actually groom their own ears by themselves without having to rely on the other Okapi to do it for them.
Jayc was right about it being a relative of the Giraffe family (Giraffidae). It actually is the only known living relative of the giraffe alive. All the other relatives went extinct a long time ago. Even though it has more of a horse body and zebra backside, these characteristics just help the animal in it's location of the Democratic Republic of Congo forests to help blend into the surroundings.
At one time, it was thought that the Okapi was nocturnal, but they have found out that they are diurnal (active during the day).
Something interesting about this animal is that they can eat some poisonous fungi. They think because of the toxin intake that the Okapi will eat the charcoal off burned trees, for it is antidote for toxins.
A baby Okapi is a nester (stays in one spot) and waits for mother to come feed and take care of the baby. The mother only comes to the baby when it is time for nursing, for what I've heard from one of the keepers at the zoo, it helps reduce the scent around where the baby is and helps protect the baby from any predators around. Another thing I learned from the keepers when we had our first baby Okapi at the zoo, the baby won't defecate for the first month or so which is when the baby is in the intensive part of its nesting. The mother can talk to the baby by using infrasound communications which is too low for us to hear, and this communication is also used by the Elephants for their chit chatting.
-
Another little snip it of an animal and don't forget if it gets too hard to tell from the picture will give hints.

-
the fuck....it's hard to see that pic....to bright!
-
Red Panda
-
nope not a Red Panda
-
It wont be a Red Panda Stray
Sexi has one in her zoo already
Has to be a new animal to make the Achat Zoo Bigger
-
It's the well known heaven animal :D Hell, I don't see anything...lol.. perhaps an ice bear hidden in snow?
-
lol Lover no
-
nope not a polar bear. ok little hint before I go to work. This animal is a solid color but can come in different colors. If no one guesses before I get back from work will post a different color one.
-
Is it kind of fox, here: Artic fox/white fox?
-
nope not a fox
-
lol no James I didn't use a guinea pig from the paper chase game.
Ok since people are having a bit of trouble with the white one. Here is the same species of animal in a different color.
-
Ermine?
-
Lion
-
nope still no correct guesses. Ok next hint. This animal is not a mammal.
-
a kind of bird?
-
yes it is a bird Jondas.
-
parakeets ;D
(http://www.strangecosmos.com/images/content/144939.jpg)
-
nope not a parakeet Dustin hehe keep guessing everyone
-
macaw parrots
-
there not enough info to go on. I spent last hour and half. looking up birds. parakeets were my first thoughts. i had a few my self.
here other guess its a Duck :D
edit:
looks like fur in the picture.
-
Kiwi :P
-
yes Dustin this bird's feathers looks like fur. Not many birds have a fur like appearance on their feathers. The feathers do not interlock making a feather look but remain loose and give more of a fur appearance.
-
I know... I know... I know....
It's Gertrude McFuzz!!

This is hard, I like to stay ostrich but they don't come in different colors as far as i know. :-\
edit:
Okay if i saw full picture of the bird would I know what its call or is this one of those rare birds?
-
ok another hint. At my zoo this animal is down in the farms area. More specifically the Asian farm.
-
Chicken ?
I'm lost, I have know idea what bird this is and the Internet searches has failed me. :'(
-
I BOW in Defeat to the all mighty sexilicious, her beauty is truly divine and so is her knowledge of the animal kingdom . :-*
-
Moroseta?
-
yes it is the moroseta and in English it is called the Silkie Bantam Chicken.
I've already mentioned the feathers. Another cool thing about this bird is that it has blue blood.
The Silkies are also used to help incubate other eggs.
-
:o Cool :)
-
Everyone did so well in guessing with that little tiny portion of the picture and was so glad to see many trying to figure it out. Having problems to load my next snip it so the next picture will be just a little bit.

LOLz Stray wins again.
Cool looking Arachnid , love the shad of blue it as. Gorgeous
-
@ Kingdustin If you look closely Brandybee got Tarantula first :)
-
I've said the exact name :P Sexi told that we should tell the exact name "African Elephant" not just "Elephant"
-
Yes I want the full common name cause there are many different species of tarantulas around the world. Not everyone knows scientific names that is why I don't want to accept scientific names cause I want everyone to understand the animals being posted and know what is being guessed.
-
Cobalt Blue Tarantula :-*
-
that's a nosense ^^ If I know the scientific name is logic that I know also the common name, I write the scietnific name because is more precise and you can be 100% sure I know the correct animal
but ok, it's your game :)
-
stray you might know the common name for the animal through the scientific name but not everyone does so it would be foreign to them. I want everyone to be able to understand what is being said and the names of the animals. SO if anyone does not understand a term I use PLEASE SAY SO. I have been around animal people so much in school that I might forget that a certain term might not be understood by everyone.
-
Handing Stray the Cobalt Blue Tarantula carefully. " Here have it ... he's gorgeous.. See.." :)
"Oh and don't forget your handbag " ;)
-
Scientific name > Wikipedia > Common name ._."
-
ok everyone I didn't realize that there were so very similar spider postings online lol. The Cobalt Blue Tarantula (Haplopelma lividum) (http://ts3.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.4778152128741406&pid=1.7&w=250&h=183&c=7&rs=1) shows up having a picture like this which is quite similar to the one I posted. However that is not the picture I posted and I think that with such similarity in two different species posted online like this would not be fair to just say no and keep guessing.
The animal I had in mind and looked up to post on here is called a Blue Bird Eating Tarantula (Brachypelma epicureanum). (http://ts3.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.4592966050054266&pid=1.7&w=254&h=178&c=7&rs=1) We have one of these at our zoo and it has a wonderful blue color. This is why I wanted to post this animal, and the internet doesn't have much on facts for the animals so tomorrow when I go to the zoo will get the info they have on that one and share it with everyone.
-
This animal is posted at the request of a friend.
-
I love this Zoo, the spiders are amazingly similar. Are they from the same part of the world?
mmmm A duck billed platypus ?
-
Platypus
-
Brandy will have to do more research on the two species just need to find reliable sources online (one of the things I learned in school lol)
Yes it is indeed a Duckbilled Platypus. One of the very few egg-laying mammals in the world. There are also 4 species of Echidnas as well. The egg laying mammals are under the group monotremes.
The Duckbilled Platypus also has spurs on its hide legs so it can inject venom into another animal.
Another interesting thing about this animal is that unlike other mammals the duckbilled platypus does NOT have any mammary glands to give milk to the babies THROUGH the nipples, but it is actually along the side of the mother where the babies just lap it up instead of having to suck to get the milk out.
-
ok folks this one is completely chosen by one of my friends including the picture so if he would like to answer it he is more than welcome to

After a bad night :
-
lol Urban and yes the animal that was suggested to me was the Philippine Tarsier.
Some of the hardships that this animal faces is that the infant mortality (rate of death) is really high, the density of the forest is being diminished, and they are also used for food and the pet trade.
This animal is currently listed as being near threatened but is almost qualified to being listed as threatened because of the decline and pet trade.
One of the interesting things about this animal is that it can rotate its head almost 360 degrees and just add in their huge eyes and this animal has such excellent vision around them.

It is likened to a tiny kangaroo as the locomotion (movement) is hopping. It can leap almost 3 meters in one jump.
Like many desert animals, this animal does not rely on water sources. The water supply comes straight from the food it eats.

Kalahari Red? or Nigerian Dwarf ?

Laughing quietly .... I spent my last holiday at my friends place in Devon. I have bruises on my legs from getting head butted while feeding them. I'm obviously not quick enough tipping the bucket of feed in to their trough .... He farms goats and his wife has some rare breeds that she shows ... I cheated and phoned them up ...
-
The Nigerian Dwarf Goat is a very sweet tempered animal and can actually be used as a pet. They also can out produce the big goats with milk.
Of the four babies we had born this year, the pure white one is my little buddy. He loves people so much that he will curl up and sleep with his head on the people's lap, hop inside their strollers and even follow them out the gate now so good thing we are stationed there to keep an eye on them. He loves to curl up in my lap when I sit down and loves to have his head itched by me. He would stay on my lap for long periods where I have to move him just so I can continue with my work. He sure knows how to grab my heart :)
@Richard that isn't cheating but using resources :) and our goats and sheep KNOW better then to try and do that with the people who work with them. Now we do have some sheep and goats in the American part of the farm that will try to head butt the guests cause they know they will drop food for them. Sometimes it seems they know the people who will give in and the people who will tell them that is not allowed.
-
I'm thinking it'e because I don't deal with them every day they take a few liberty's more than would with my friend and his wife. When they have been fed then they are very friendly and one follows my friends wife around all day ... He never leaves her side and knows he is not allowed in the house so he waits at the door for her. Real cute animals and the cheese from the milk is wonderfully sweet ...
-
Goats are so amazing :) they love the attention so much more than the sheep would.
-
Secsi
Do you know why sheep don't like attention from humans ?
-

swamp rat is a rodent in the order rodentia not insectivora ;D

-
you guys and gals can google and look online to find animals with a purple color lol ;)
-
It's a Polar Bear :)
-
yes it is indeed a Polar Bear. The purple color is due to the treatment of the animal that had a skin condition.
Purple is not a normal color and does not happen often at all for them but here is one that can occur a bit more.
The green is actually algae growing in the hair follicles that they had gotten while swimming.
-

anyone else going to mention an animal that fits the description?
Name a sheep that after breaking a horn off will still have at least 2 horns.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but would a three-horned Hebridean sheep fit the description?
Here's a picture I found of one:
-
oh my.......sometimes i ask why humans create hibrids....it's a sort of desre to be a God!? Or there is some strange plane behind this!?
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but would a three-horned Hebridean sheep fit the description?

yes a 3 horned would fit the description cause if one breaks there still is 2. Anyone else want to mention another that would fit the description
-
What's with an usual sheep? It has 2 horns and if one breaks, it still has 2.
-
What's with an usual sheep? It has 2 horns and if one breaks, it still has 2.
not necessarily Lover it depends on where the break is. It could be all the way at the base so there is no horn left for that sheep and they never will have that horn again. Ok so new question to go along with the other one.
What is the maximum horns a species of sheep will have? need the number of horns as well as the species of sheep.
-
But I was right :)
-
nobody wants to share one of the sheep on here?? Well fine I will share one of the sheep that we had at our zoo that we recently sent out.
The sheep we had was called a Jacob sheep. This sheep can actually have up to 6 horns but seems sets of 2 or 4 are more common. Will miss our sheep. We had 2 of the babies this year that were my little buddies. One of them was bottle raised due to mom not having enough milk and he and I bounded that very first day. He had 4 horns but ended up knocking both of his side horns off due to jumping through the fence and hitting it on the fence too often. Sure miss them.

time to guess an animal ;) lets see who can guess this first
-
mmmm a baby Armadillo ?
-
looking for species remember
-
Easy one. It's Sandshrew. It looks close to evolving into a Sandslash.
-
lol hukk. ;) two points for making me smile but it not the correct answer.
-
Looks like a guinea pig, an armadillo, a bear and a goat had a wild orgy... And I bet this thing also lays eggs under water.
So I'd say a goapigadillo bearypus...far cousin of the duck-billed platypus?
-
since no1 guessed it i will reveal the answer. The animal is a pink fairy armadillo
-
Lolz
That was fun Sexi.
Another one please?
