Sometimes different countries have different delightful sayings for situations -

One that made me smile  is the saying when you wish you could hear that private conversation..

In the UK  we  say  "  I wish I was a fly on the wall when that happens... "

In Germany, I have been reliably informed they say ...  " I wish I could play mouse when that happens ... "

Different areas of the UK also have different local sayings,   when something is particularly expensive and you think they are taking advantage of you
we say ..   "You are having my eyes out!"

Or when you think you are being teased, taken for an idiot  -  " You are pulling my leg "    " You are taking the Micky / Michael "  or stronger " You are taking the piss"   " Stop pissing around"

When you have had enough and not listening anymore, Don't waste my time , again its quite strong, almost insulting, -  " You're pissing in the wind "

When someone says something irrelevant in a conversation, or changes the subject without warning, we say  " What's that got to do with the price of fish? "

There's bound to be lots more, but these are the ones "off the top of my head"      LOL.

He's acting like someone kicked his dunny door down = he's grumpy
He's worse than a cat on a hot tin roof = he's really loud
He's dinky die = he's honest
Wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire = really dislike him
I've been flat out like a lizard drinking = I've been very busy
His sheila caught him bumping uglies = He was caught cheating by his girl

My favourite maybe isn't a saying as such still it is telling
Window - from Scandinavian languages Vind (Wind) Öga (Eye)
Title: Re: Different names for...
Post by: Tom_Hardy on January 27, 2014, 08:16:11 PM
Another favourite:
Eavsdrop - from Scandinavian languages Öfsadröpp, meaning the raindropps falling off from the part of the roof that is sticking out from the wall. Stand below that roof and you may hear what happens inside.

"a tube of Neck oil"    a can  of beer

"shake hands with the unemployed"    take a piss

"the furry vee"    when a persons eyebrows angle in when the don't understand you

Talking about chicken, eggs, and colorful sayings as Jay put it reminds me of this dialogue:

Two chicken were having a talk around a barn corner and bragging about their eggs. The first said my eggs are sold at 45 cents a piece, the other laughed and said mine are bigger and are priced at 50 cents. The First sneered and barked that she wont be tearing her ass off for 5 cents.

Usually tearing the ass off means doing something very difficult.

Point percy at the porcelain — Urinate (male)

He’s got tickets on himself — A person who thinks he is the greatest

G'day — Universal greeting, used anytime day or night, but never as a farewell. Usually followed by "mate"  or a typically strung-together "howyagoinallright" = how are you today, feeling pretty good?

Fair Dinkum— Kosher, the real thing - as in "Fair Dinkum Aussie" (true blue Aussie original). Often used by itself as a rhetorical question to express astonishment verging on disbelief ... "Fair Dinkum, mate?" = you've got to be kidding, haven't you?

Drink with the flies - having a drink alone
