The Indiana automobile dealer Carl Fisher first proposed building a private auto testing facility in 1906, in order to address car manufacturers’ inability to test potential top speeds of new cars due to the poorly developed state of the public roadways. The result was the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, built on 328 acres of farmland five miles northwest of downtown Indianapolis. The idea was that occasional races at the track would pit cars from different manufacturers against each other in order to showcase their full power and entice spectators to check out the new models themselves. In 1911, Fisher and his partners decided to focus on one long race per year, as opposed to numerous shorter events, in order to attract more publicity. The purse for the grueling 500-mile race would be the richest in racing.

On May 30th 1911, Ray Harroun drove his single-seater Marmon Wasp to victory in the inaugural Indianapolis 500, now one of the world’s most famous motor racing competitions.

7 FUN FACTS ABOUT THE INDY 500
1 The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the world’s largest spectator sporting facility, with more than 250,000 permanent seats.
2 The “Brickyard” gets its name from the 1909 surfacing project when 3.2 million street paving bricks were laid. On the current asphalt track, one yard of the historic brickwork is exposed at the start-finish line.
3 It’s been said that Yankee Stadium, the Rose Bowl, Churchill Downs, the Colosseum in Rome and Vatican City all can fit inside the Indy oval (253 acres).
4 The winner is awarded the sterling silver Borg-Warner Trophy, commissioned in 1935 at a cost of $10,000. The trophy today is valued at more than $1 million.
5 A pre-race tradition (since 1946) is the singing of “Back Home Again in Indiana.’’
6 If all of the Indy hot dogs and bratwurst sold on race day were laid end-to-end, they would circle the oval more than three times.
7 The tradition of drinking milk after the race began in 1936 with winner Louis Meyer. He drank buttermilk because his mother advised him it was a good drink for a hot day. In 1993, Emerson Fitipaldi went rogue and drank orange juice to promote citrus groves owned by his family. He then took a sip of milk, but it didn't stop fans in Wisconsin (America's Dairyland) from booing him the following week. ;D

Pippa Mann Poised To Be Sole Female Driver At Indy 500
When part-time Verizon IndyCar racer Pippa Mann qualifies later this month for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, she likely will be the only female in the final starting grid of 33 drivers. It will be her fifth 500-miler at Indy, and her fourth in a row for Dale Coyne Racing.

“I thought there were going to be two or three of us [women] this year,” says Mann, all of 32. “But I’m just thankful to have the opportunity to get back into a race car. The current, fourth-generation IndyCar formula was presented in 2012. The engines are now 2.2-liter twin turbo V-6's putting out estimated 550–700 hp depending on the level of boost used. They are limited to 12,000 rpm. Engines are currently supplied by Chevrolet and Honda.

Alexander Rossi wins the Indianapolis 500 while running out of gas
The Indianapolis 500 has been known for some unpredictable finishes. The 100th one came up with an incredibly surprising winner as American Alexander Rossi coasted to the checkered flag for his first IndyCar win.
In fact, you could argue Rossi is the most surprising winner in the 500's history. But before we say why, here's how he got to victory lane.
Yes, Rossi's car literally coasted towards the yard of bricks on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway frontstretch. There wasn't anyone around Rossi when he came to the finish line, thankfully for him because he was running on fumes. The strategy play to stay out while most of the leaders pitted for fuel late paid off as Carlos Munoz, the first driver who pitted for fuel, finished second, a quarter-track behind Rossi.
When the green flag flew with 33 laps to go in the Indianapolis 500, there was a chance the 100th edition of the race was going to come down to fuel mileage. By sitting ninth at the final restart Rossi had the opportunity to try the fuel gamble.
It worked. After he took the checkered flag, Rossi radioed to his crew that he was out of gas. His last lap averaged 180 MPH. The pole speed for the race was approximately 230 MPH.

Hey everyone, I want to say thanks for all the good sportsmanship!! At no time did I think it was possible a rookie could win, but I hung on each turn and watched it happen. I guess it's ironic that I am a rookie to entering events here (my first one) and had a rookie driver.
I do have to think Brandybee for asking me to join the race. I would not have joined, if she did not encourage me! Thank you. The other group of people I want everyone to recgnoize, is the team of people who work together to make events and this site possible!! If you see them or chat with them, spend a second and say, Thank You. It doesn't cost you anything, makes them feel appreciated and who knows - might make you smile as well ;D
