Title: Favorite TV
Post by: Janine Dee on June 24, 2010, 11:34:34 AM
Next in a continuing series of seemingly popular threads here is where we can discuss our favorite TV shows.

Much like I noted in the movie thread I like action that feels like it's real people carrying it out. Burn Notice feels like just that. While they do enjoy explosions, there are explosions in the real world, and they are spread out enough that they don't feel over used.

The main character Micheal Weston is also constantly speaking in  voice over as well, letting you know the tactical and strategic value of what it is he is doing, leaving you with that feel this is a real guy who has to be real paranoid or he would be really dead.

He isn't just some growling muscle bound dude blasting away with an auto weapon, but a thinker who makes himself stay one step of those he is up against.

And when he fails to do so he really gets his ass kicked, and not in just cosmetic ways.

Another show I love that uses the voice over is Dexter, and it has to when your main character is a serial killer with a code. That's what first attracted me to the show when a review talked about how his cop foster father recognized the signs in a young Dexter and realized he couldn't "fix" him so he trained him, trained him to take out his murderous impulses on those who deserve it.

It is a wicked indulgence, but we all have our dark side, and when Dexter is taking out his murderous impulses on child murderers and the like mine is well fed.

On those who really get their asses kicked in fights I HAVE to mention Supernatural. I've always liked shows with a paranormal theme, and loved shows like Buffy (I still like to say Amber Benson made me gay  ;D but that's a much longer story).

Supernatural though is about two brothers who are "Hunters" people with the self appointed mission to battle the supernatural predators that live out there in the night.

These guys however really are fighting monsters and get the hell beat out of them on a regular basis, which gives the show a greater sense of reality even though it's about fantastic concepts.

I don't want to go into the story of any of these because they are all still running and all worth checking out.

For those shows that are said and done I have to think everyone has seen some Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and while that show went on two seasons too long in my opinion it earned it's iconic status.

My all time favorite however would have to be "The Shield" and my love of the show could be summed up in the story Micheal Chicklis (the star) once related on a talk show... how he got a letter from a law class that said how they would watch the show and then debate the ethics.

My favorite example from the very first episode... a little girl is missing, has been missing for a good twenty four hours. They KNOW they have the guy, but he's a doctor and has the kind of mind that will take a while to break in interrogation.

The problem is that the girl has been missing twenty four hours and if she hasn't gotten water she doesn't have much time left. The other idea was to let him go and tail him to the girl.

The problem with that is if he shook the tail the first thing he would do is dispose of the girl and dump the body.

Their Captain grabbed Chicklis' character Vic Mackey... and Vic BEAT the information out of the guy. On the DVD extras there was a cut scene where the guy was shown in the interrogation room afterward, beaten, bloody, having actually pissed himself.

BUT the girl was at the address Mackey beat out of the guy, and she was found alive.

We can debate the ethics of that if  everyone would like, but that was what the show did... kept things in that gray area. It lived there and took the viewers with. Doing so in a way that still can enthrall me when I put those discs in.

Wow... did the preview... yeah TV is my thing.  ;D :P

Janine, I answer to your post about Star Trek in "Quizz". Although this is another wrong place, lol.
I didn't talk about the serial, but the films. I agree with you about the serials, Star Trek and TNG I think they are great. DS9 lala, Voyager was good, but not really Star Trek and the last serie which should be the first Statrship Enterprise was bad.

But the films got better and better and especially the last one was great.

One of my favs is "Navy CIS", an offshot of "JAG".
NCIS is revolving around a fictional team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which conducts criminal investigations involving the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
Si it's a crime thriller, but including a special sense of humour. There is not just hero or one special person who solves the cases, the whole team is part of it. Each member of the team is a special charcter, having an own personality.
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: Janine Dee on June 24, 2010, 01:22:00 PM
I didn't even watch "Enterprise" I mean if they couldn't put the "Star Trek" in front of it I didn't feel compelled to follow.

And NCIS has been a  huge favorite... though I didn't like where they took Ziva's storyline and basically re-wrote the Ari angle... which I felt was essential to her dynamic with Gibbs.

It is a spectacular cast though with an amazing chemistry flowing between all of them. While Ziva, Abby and Gibbs would be my three favorites they really are all spectacular.
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: Lover on June 24, 2010, 01:27:18 PM
Ziva gives it a special note. And Ducky is always an enrichment. But most of all I love Abby. If they delete her part one day, I never will watch it again. Though I hope they are smart enough and don't get this stupid idea.
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: Janine Dee on June 24, 2010, 01:29:28 PM
Ducky was VERY close to making my favorites list, VERY close, I do adore the guy. The thing is I CAN put him after Ziva, Gibbs and Abby, but those three battle for the top spot.

And yes I can't imagine the show without Abby. You may have to imagine the show without Ducky though, from what I understand the actor is actively pondering retirement.
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: Lover on June 24, 2010, 01:42:57 PM
I can imagine without Ducky. He is very precious, but also a "normal" character. A new actor, not as Ducky, but with an own special note, can make it. In my opinion, there is just one Abby. She is unique, cause her character is based more on her own individuality then on her "work" as a forensics specialist.
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: Janine Dee on June 24, 2010, 01:48:41 PM
Agreed on both counts, that's why I can see it without Ducky, but not without Abby.

V the 1980's series.  Dark Shadows(old an 80's version).  Star Trek(all versions, Next Gen was the best version tho). Alien Nation.  Buck Rogers, yeah I said Buck Rogers.  Battlestar Galactica.  Farscape(why did you have to be cancelled :'(). Fringe. Dr. Who(old an new).  Red Dwarf. Stargate(all including the new Universe).  The Boondocks(the cartoon).

Thats all I have to say.  Well I have a whole list but I'll end up taking up the whole page.  These are some of my favs.   :D ;D
Title: Re: Favorite TV

I have never seen Dr. Who. But I loved an offshot - Torchwood. I hope they will go on; of course they have to create new characters or must give me a really good explanation if they reanimate the old team (cause they died).

Shame on me, a show that deserves special recognition for both being brilliant as well as not running any longer then it should is Babylon 5. When it was created it was five years, only five years, no spin off, no movies, 5 years, and that's it, and while I think there may have been a movie somewhere along the line the brilliant thing was that it was a whole creation before it ever aired. All threads woven were woven to completion, and instead of a story assembled by a committee (or a mob) it was a singular vision that played out to completion.

And singularly unique in that aspect.

Yeah I'm a hot geek too.  :P

I knew there was a reason why I desire you so J. Bab5 is on my list to. Only watched the up til the knew guy from Scarecrow an Miss. King took command, then it went to cable.  WHYYYYYYY.
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: Lover on June 24, 2010, 03:21:37 PM
I liked and watched Bab5 too. But some months ago, when they repeated it on TV, I recognized this time is over.

Two other ones I asbolutely love: Dr. House and Monk

In Germany, they usually are shown one after the other at the same evening. So all my friends know, at this day they are not allowed to call me.

Oh my... I'm an addict too.

I have to agree on Dexter and Supernatural from Janine's posts, I'm actually in the process of watching through the Supernatural episodes this summer, didn't get around to it before.
As with movies I have a soft spot for sci-fi as well so I've followed some of the shows Sinnnn already mentioned; Battlestar Galactica, Farscape, Dr. Who etc.

My all time favourites are Firefly and Six Feet Under though. I've yet to run across something close to either of those really.

More from my list: True Blood, American Dad!, Family Guy, United States of Tara, Futurama (new season just started, yay!), The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother (watching through season 2 now, soon up to date) and Lost.

I must also say that Heroes season one was really great, but then the shit hit the fan and I regret following the rest of that mess.

When I think I'm done, you ppl keep dragging me back in.

All I have to say to you Supernatural fans.  What has Sam become?  I can't wait til season 6, I have got to know.  Will he be fighting his brother or will he just disappear an Dean will find out he is no longer trapped and go looking for him?  Sam a angel or demon?  I must know now.  >:(

I like Grey's Anatomy.  The season ending was to get shot over and die for. ::)

My bad. Only on season two, you Newbie.  LOL.  I won't say anymore.  But it was gooooooood. ;) :-X mums the word.

Love Firely, was sooo pissed they ended it on its first season, then have a nerve to tease us with a movie.  I had to buy the box.  Evil ppl, make great sci-fi an end it before it truly began. :-\

Yeah but worst, LOL. Good looking out Lover :P

Oh have to mention Sliders, was my fav til the last season.  The main character got greedy, demanding and refuse to come back if his brother couldn't come back as well.  Totally ruined the last season, I couldn't even watch 5mins of it.   :P
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: Bear on June 24, 2010, 07:34:26 PM
bouli you beat me to the Firefly reference, great show, and its sequel movie Serenity, worth the watch if you like sci-fi with unique and interesting characters even though it was short lived. The series has accumulated a strong cult following. and for you comic book collectors it will be going to print as a series (if it hasn't already).

Personally don't watch too much tv during the summer, (just to much to do around here outdoors) come winter when the cold settles in is when I catch up on shows: Dexter, Trueblood, (and also catching up on Supernatural so hush...)...might offer Deadwood as a suggestion. A ralistic, brutal dramatic (laced with some wicked humor) viewpoint of a Dakota mining town...Ian McShane gives some some of the best reflective monologues you'll ever hear.

Eureka is another fav, along with...Chuck

I like Monk, I can sit and watch and enjoy Monk, but the dvd's are on the "someday" list while I'm thinking I will be picking up Burn Notice this weekend, as a comparison.

For those early on in Supernatural... your heart is going to break for Dean at the end of  season 2 even as you praise Ackles for his performance. (Sinnnn knows what I'm talking about, but I wouldn't DREAM of spoiling.  ;D )

Dexter... what I have been LOVING with Dexter is how he has been finding his humanity. Even as a serial killer he is developing those feelings for those around him, wife, stepkids, baby... he cares for them.

I still remember the ep where a bad man takes an interest in Aster (stepdaughter)... I won't spoil more then that... and that's more a teaser.  :P

Oh dear, where to begin with all these wonderful shows being discussed. Sliders, NCIS, Dexter, Monk, Bab 5, Dr. Who(only the original), TNG, DS9, Voyager, Original Star Trek of course. Sadly I have only seen the first season of Dexter, as I don't get any premium channels, but I have plans to buy all the seasons on DVD when money allows it. I absolutely love NCIS, without doubt my favorite show. I will always rank Abby as my favorite character from the show, but is the dynamics of the group is what makes it such a hit for me. The only character I can say I would not miss if he were written out, is Leon Vance. His only value is as a foe for Gibbs. That makes him expendable in my opinion.
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: Janine Dee on June 25, 2010, 04:32:57 PM
I honestly don't like Vance, at all, not even that love to hate one would seem to look for in his character. To have someone there as counterpoise to Gibbs they would have to be interesting and have to have Gibbs' respect. Jenny had both, Vance has neither.
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: Lover on June 25, 2010, 04:48:26 PM
I agree 100% to you girls. Vance is superfluous, Jenny was the right character. The former relationship between her and Gibbs made it very interesting.

I like Law an Order SVU an CSI Las V, use to like the New York one.   I do love the new NCIS.  I'm afraid to say anything else, since I have a habit of doing spoilers. ;D
Title: Re: Favorite TV

NCIS Los Angeles is a good show, not up tp par with the original. The team dynamic is not there. Too many A types who want to be Lone Wolves. I love Hetty though, you never know what she is going to do next. And she is obsessed with clothes. A woman after my own heart.

X-Files
SHIELD
Farscape
Eureka
Big Bang Theory
Terminator:Sarah Connor Chronicles...Summer Glau yummm
Gilmore Girls
to name a few...
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: sinnnn on June 26, 2010, 12:15:26 AM
X-Files was good except for that damn ending.  And the second movie was good for tv not large screen.  Knight Rider, Wonder Woman, The Stuntman, Charles in Charge, Family Ties, I'm talking bout the oldies but goodies.  Will an Grace.   ;D
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: bobbler on June 26, 2010, 07:28:58 AM
I didn't mind the ending.

And as hard as it is for me to say this, being the *HUGE* X-Files fan that I am, the second movie sucked.  I did not like it at all.  And you're right, it was like an extended TV episode...but that is what they wanted it to be.  I thought they could have come up with a much more original story line for the movie than they did.

...and you don't even want to know how many times i saw the first movie... :D
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: Janine Dee on June 26, 2010, 10:37:36 AM
Actually the Sarah Connor Chronicles deserve special mention because they too had a less then stellar ending... it was a cliffhanger when they weren't renewed. I loved Cameron, I still want to know what secrets were carried in her digitally encoded head, and while Sarah was more then a little intense more then a little bit of the time too she was awesome.

The guys however failed to impress me (yeah, yeah I know  :P) but seriously though their John Connor becoming someone Skynet would consider a threat? There's a million and one little punks like him found sneering at life down at the food court.

And Uncle Reese? I REALLY liked seeing what happened to him at the last episode... the fact he was played by Brian Austin Green was candy.

A wonderful show that had maybe 60% of it's potential realized.

I have T:TSCC on DVD, both seasons.  Have to sit down and watch them one of these days.

I thought the show was really well written and there were a lot of clever twists and turns.  I didn't really care for the casting of Shirley Manson as that character (can't remember the name right now), but I think she got better as the show went on.

And Lena Headey's portrayal of Sarah was excellent, while some of the funniest moments in the show came from the Terminator Cameron.
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: sinnnn on June 26, 2010, 05:50:37 PM
Big Terminator fan but I could never get into the tv series.  For one it was showing round same time as Supernatural.  I kept switching back an forth till I had to choose.  Was getting confused.
Anyway how bout the Highlander series.  I loved it until they got all sappy.  When the boy he was taking care of turned out to be an immortal and he found out from a gypsy that he will never marry(blah, blah, blah).  It just went all down hill from there.  Then they did the female spin off, WHY?  The other movie made tv series, The Crow(the 1st one was good, Miss you Braden).  It was alright, had my fav actor starring in it.

I don't have a recorder duh. ;D LOL.  An I don't have cable or tivo.  So I had to choose. An I chose wisely my young padiwan  :P
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: Janine Dee on June 26, 2010, 06:38:15 PM
Glau dominated... a sentence that gives me a wonderful warm sensation. For a character that was supposed to be a machine she had a wonderful depth to her.

And not only was Lena awesome as Sarah, but some of the best moments in the show came when she had Cameron/Glau were working together.

So yes, sit down and watch the DVD's, I love mine.

For you Sinnnn... you may really have chosen wisely, I too am a Terminator fan, but seeing John turned into that sneering slappable punk... I'd rather have the fate of all mankind riding on Dean, or even Sam before John Connor of the series.

I like CSI; Las Vegas, Miami and New York. A new NCIS? It's unknown in Germany, so please tell me more about it.
Criminal Intent is another one I like to watch.
Title: Re: Favorite TV

Criminal Minds, I love Reed and Penelope , the way their minds work fascinates me. One disappointment though, I hear they are writing out J.J., Why?? Why are they doing this to me.
Of the CSI's I like Vegas, and New York, Miami I can take or leave it, with each new season, I seem to leave it more.
Title: Re: Favorite TV

Criminal Minds is great. Though I was disappointed when they wrote out Gideon. And Penelope is similar important as Abby is.
Title: Re: Favorite TV

Gideon was written out of Criminal Minds at the request of the actor Mandy Potemkin. He decided to walk away from the show. He got bored with the role, and the set schedule of working. This is not the first time he has done this on a Television series. I like him as an actor, but as a person, he just seems a little off to me.
Title: Re: Favorite TV
Post by: bobbler on June 27, 2010, 04:09:26 PM
Criminal Minds...really?  I know a lot of people like it and lots of others are shocked that it has done so well and is still on the air, but I watched the season finale and thought it was kinda dumb.  The killer was not all that scary or threatening to me.

I like CSI:NY the best, but again, the season finale was dumb.  Their season finales the previous 2 seasons were excellent I thought.  I watch it hit-and-miss through the season, as I do with Miami, and rarely watch the original.

What kind of cable? I've mentioned to you (Sinnnn) about the game room I'm assembling, and I was planning on moving my PC in there... it might be worth it to put them so that a cable would be able to easily reach from on to the other.

Any software needed? Or is it just like hooking a DVD player to the TV?
Title: Re: Favorite TV

The HDMI cable.  Its the same cable that you use to hook your ps3 to your tv.  Here at bestbuy it runs from 29.99 to 100.  Just check to to see if your tv has more than one HDMI hook up on it and its easy as hell.
You hook it up an you turned your tv into a computer screen.

Has anyone seen "The Man in the High Castle"? I want to find it online.
It's an alternate reality show about an America that lost WWII

Rufus Sewell is in it. (he's cute)

I'm up to episode 6, but honestly I had to slog through the first 2 episodes until it started getting interesting. but hey, they're building characters.
And Frank really reminds me of Rick Springfield
