Title: Trojan horse in AChat Updater??? - No, that is false detection of McAfee
Post by: TightFit74 on October 05, 2010, 08:43:55 AM
Hi guys,

since today my anti-virus program deletes the AChat updater because it supposedly contains a trojan horse. Anyone had that experience? I had to reinstall AChat to be able to get it t work again and am missing the last update. It seems as if there is something wrong with that update. I'd like to hear from the A-team too...

Hi,
please allow me to answer here.
McAfee antivirus detects FALSE trojan in version updater, and deletes it without any question.

ACHAT IS CLEAN AND SAFE, THAT IS AN ERROR OF MCAFEE HEURISTIC DETECTION!!

AChat will be checked regularly with Kaspersky, Norton Antivirus, AVG, NOD32, and McAfee Antivirus.
We have reported the problem to McAfee, but we don't know yet when we will get an answer.

The new full version (please download it!) is able to run also with deleted version updater, and we are looking for new solutions too.

Regards,
tom

Did you change something in your anti-virus-software? Probably you made an update?

I know that many softwares using a gui-interface are giving a warning. When I first installed AChat, I got a warning, too. So I think (and hope) this is the simple problem.

For the next time, for such questions it's better to use the FAQ or "Got any problems..."-board.

Thanks lover, I'll redirect my question to that board.

I noted in more detail on that board, but I'll note it here and say security programs DO get false positives. I will be running my scanner once I'm done with all I need to do, and if anyone has free time on their comp to run an in depth scan they may wish to, but unless others with other anti-virus programs run into it I would say it's on your end rather then a problem with AChat.

I'd like to refer to the post in the technical section. Had contact with mcafee and the solution they suggest is outrageous

Hi Tom,

I tried and found that I can play achat, but under a couple of conditions:

1. turn off McAfee "real-time virus scanner"
2. Reinstall AChat
3. Start and play

Downside: as soon as you turn on the real-time scanner again, it will detect a trojan horse and removes it. Which means going through steps 1-3 all over again, everytime you want to play.

Who's supposed to fix this problem? I'm paying for both services and neither can do anything about it? So what's the deal here?

regards,
TightFit

Please remember, that McAfee deletes the  harmless version updater, and not vice versa. Deletes without question, additional info, and without the possibility to define an exception.

McAfee could solve the problem very easily, they should define an exception for version updater in their Artemis database. We hope sooner or later they will do it.

Thanks a lot Tom for at least adapting AChat in such a way it is playale, even while McAfee is running. I appreciate your efforts a lot.
As far as I'm concerned, this topic can be closed. Enough info shared. I'm just happy to be able to play again!

UPDATE!

McAfee put the version updater to white list, so it will not be deleted by McAfee antivirus any more!

If you re-install AChat using the last available full version, the automatic version updater will run without problems again!

That's great news Tom. I'm very glad they took notice of your (and maybe our) requests!

Thanks for the effort!
