    Daytona 500 betting odds, picks

Let's take a look at all the drivers odds and chances from the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook with last weeks odds in parenthesis:

DALE EARNHARDT JR 6/1 – With Jeff Gordon retired, his 10 restrictor-plate wins are the most among active drivers and three of the wins came in the past two seasons, including the 2014 Daytona 500. Even though we didn't get to see what he was really capable of Saturday night after damaging his car early, you know he's going to be battling up front with the leaders late if he can keep his car healthy for all 200 laps. Not much has changed with the plate package this year from the past two years and Junior's 9.8 average finish in the eight plate races over that span is the best in the series. He's a deserving favorite.

JOEY LOGANO 8/1 (10/1) – We haven't seen a back-to-back Daytona 500 winner since Sterling Marlin in 1995 — Logano was 4-years old — but based on the Sprint Unlimited where he finished second, he looks like he's going to be a major force Sunday. He and teammate Brad Keselowski have worked extremely well together in the draft during practices and in the Unlimited. Junior won two plate races last season and Logano won the other two, the first two of his career. The kid is getting better every time out.

JIMMIE JOHNSON 10/1 (7/1) – Like Junior, we didn't get to see Johnson at his best Saturday night, but Hendrick Motorsports will be  good Sunday — they've won the Daytona 500 eight times. Johnson has two of those 500 wins, including 2013 when he swept the Daytona season.

DENNY HAMLIN 10/1 (15/1) – He got out front Saturday night and no one could pass him, which looks like the winning strategy for  Sunday. He's finished sixth or better in the past four Daytona races (3.75 average finish) and his 10th-place average finish in the past eight plate races is second only to Junior. His real strength in this one to capture his first points paying race at Daytona (three wins in the Sprint Unlimited) is having so many fast JGR teammates to push him in the draft. The value is gone with no more 15-to-1, but he still should be part of any wagering equation.

MATT KENSETH 10/1 (12/1) – He's a two-time Daytona 500 winner, one of only 11 drivers in NASCAR history to have multiple wins. His 2009 win came from a 39th start position, the furthest an eventual winner has ever started. He looked very strong with Hamlin and Carl Edwards in the draft Saturday night.

BRAD KESELOWSKI 10/1 (12/1) – He's got three wins at Talladega, but Daytona has eluded him with a 22nd-place average finish in 13 starts. As long as he stays on the track, the combination of he and Logano is going to make him a strong play.

CARL EDWARDS 12/1 (15/1) – He's never won a plate race and has only four top-five finishes in 22 starts at Daytona with a 20th-place average finish. However, he's always been much more competitive than his record shows at Daytona. Being with JGR makes him a strong candidate to win Sunday.

KEVIN HARVICK 12/1 (10/1) – He's a two-time winner at Daytona, including the 2007 Daytona 500 where his 0.020-second margin over Mark Martin was the closest finish in Daytona 500 history. He was second and fourth in the two Daytona races last season. No one seems to be talking about him much as candidate to win, but his strength is he's so well respected in plate races that he always seems to find a draft partner no matter their manufacturer. He runs a smart plate race.

KYLE BUSCH 12/1 – Only five reigning Sprint Cup champions have gone on to win the Daytona 500 the following season with Dale Jarrett during his incredible 2000 speedweeks being the last. Busch won at Daytona in the summer of 2008, but hasn't had a top-five there since 2011.

KURT BUSCH 15/1 – He's easily the best plate race driver to never have won a race on them. In 59 career plate starts, he has 18 top-five finishes, including his last two Daytona starts. His 14 Daytona 500 starts without a win is the most among active drivers.

MARTIN TRUEX JR 20/1 (18/1) – He's never had a top-five in 22 Daytona starts, but he also might not have ever had a car as strong as this one. The No. 78 team switched over to Toyota this season and has an alliance with JGR using actual chassis' that Gibbs cars ran in plate races last season. That gives the JGR team essentially five strong cars to help each other out in the draft.

CHASE ELLIOTT 20/1 (40/1) – Nine Daytona 500 winners have started from the pole, which is the most of any start position. However, a rookie can't win the Daytona 500, right? Wait, Trevor Bayne did it in 2011. Perhaps the best reason to support him Sunday, despite his odds dropping, is that he drivers for Hendrick Motorsports. Jeff Gordon won 12 plate races for HMS driving the No. 24. His father, Bill Elliott, also won the Daytona 500 twice.

RYAN BLANEY 25/1 (40/1) – The famed No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford has won the Daytona 500 five times — the last in 2011. The main reason to support Blaney this week is the affiliation with Penske Racing. Logano, Keselowski and Blaney were fastest together in a three-train draft during the second Daytona 500 practice.

KASEY KAHNE 25/1 (15/1) – No wins in 48 career plate races with only five top-five finishes. Obviously, it's not his best type of track, but because of his HMS power and having teammates such as Earnhardt Jr. and Johnson helping him in the draft, he has to be considered as a candidate to win.

KYLE LARSON 30/1 – Okay, so in eight career plate races he's averaged a terrible 29th-place average. But plate racing is a learning process that takes some drivers a while and he did enough good things Saturday in the Unlimited, hooking up with Ganassi teammate Jamie McMurray in the draft. That suggests he can make his way into the lead pack, and then anything is possible.

JAMIE McMURRAY 30/1 – He's only got seven wins in his career, but four of them have come in plate races, including the 2010 Daytona 500. He was one of three drivers to lead a lap (14 laps) in the Sprint Unlimited and maneuvered well when trying to move through the pack. He's one of the better longer shots on the board.

AUSTIN DILLON 40/1 – Seeing the No. 3 win at Daytona would be a treat, and Dillon has shown to be smart in plate races — taking only what is there. Let's call it conservative-aggressive. He's averaging about a ninth-place finish at Daytona over his past four starts there.

CLINT BOWYER 40/1 – He's got two plate wins at Talladega and been close several times at Daytona. Overall, his 15th-place average in plate races is second best to Junior among all active drivers.

RYAN NEWMAN 40/1 – 2008 Daytona 500 winner, his only plate race win in 56 career starts. His Richard Childress Racing teammates all figure to be equally good and will hook up well in the draft.

GREG BIFFLE 40/1 – Captured his first career Cup race at Daytona in summer of 2003. Third-place in the 2010 and 2012 Daytona 500, 10th last season. He'll be good in the draft.

PAUL MENARD 40/1 (50/1) – Third-place in Sprint Unlimited; 20th-place average in 17 Daytona starts. The RCR cars look like they might do well hooking up with each other Sunday.

ARIC ALMIROLA 80/1 (60/1) – He won his only career Cup race in summer of 2014 at Daytona (rain-shortened) — his only top-10 finish at Daytona in nine starts. He's further proof that anything can happen at Daytona and no bet is a bad bet until it actually loses.

RICKY STENHOUSE JR 80/1 (60/1) – He's shown to be at his best in plate races, where Roush Fenway Racing has been competitive recently. He was sixth in Saturday's Unlimited.

DANICA PATRICK 80/1 (60/1) – Two top-10s in seven Cup starts at Daytona is encouraging. She appears to be most comfortable in plate races, especially at Daytona.

TREVOR BAYNE 80/1 (60/1) – 2011 Daytona 500 winner, the only win of his career. His ninth-place finish last summer at Daytona was his best since winning. It'll be interesting to see how well the Roush cars work together.

CASEY MEARS 80/1 (100/1) – He finished fifth Saturday night, which continues a strong trend he's had a Daytona for the past three years — eighth-place average in last five starts.

AJ ALLMENDINGER 100/1 (80/1) – Career-best third-place in 2009 Daytona 500; 20th or worse in his past five Daytona starts.

MICHAEL WALTRIP 200/1 (100/1) – Two-time Daytona 500 champion — all four of his career wins came in plate races. Finished 26th in last years Daytona 500.

TONY STEWART xxxx – Off-road accident keeps him out and Brian Vickers (part of field wager) is scheduled to drive the No. 14.

FIELD 25/1 (40/1) – Vickers would be the best of the candidates to win among the field wager.
