      George Duke R.I.P.

i just read with some sadness that George Duke has passed away.George was a talented keyboard player who had played with some of the biggest names in music. i had seen him many times when he played with Frank Zappa in the 80s he then moved on and had a great carreer on his own and with some of todays jazz greats.

here is a link of George playing a rocking pipe organ in a zappa song……..yes a pipe organ 🙂

Hello Lover ~  It has been awhile since I have been to the “forum” section of this site.  I must admit,  did not expect to see a tribute to J.J. Cale here, but I am so grateful that you posted one!  J.J.'s music has enriched my life in ways that I do not feel I can describe in words.  I have seen him many time and have also had the good fortune to have met him, talked to him, helped him and his band find food in Raleigh NC in the wee hours of the morning, and of course had him sign most of my album and CDs!  Also, I have a dear friend who passed on back in the 1990s who shared a back-up band with J.J. for a brief portion of his career.  It was through this connection that my friend acquired J.J.'s famous drum-machine that appears on many of his albums and demos.  I consider it a holy relic!  Anyway, thank you for the post.  It warmed my heart.  And for those of you who don't know his music, I highly recommend “Naturally” and “Troubador” to get you started!  Peace and Love ~  Dex

Lou Reed never had the commercial success of his peers but was a respected poet and song writer with a long career. as Lover has said he is best know for Walk on the wild side. but give this song a listen, from his live album “rock & roll  animal  1973

Lou Reed was bisexual and received electroconvulsive therapy as a teenager, which was intended to cure his bisexuality; he wrote about the experience in his 1974 song, “Kill Your Sons.”

In an interview, Reed said of the experience:

“They put the thing down your throat so you don't swallow your tongue, and they put electrodes on your head. That's what was recommended in Rockland County to discourage homosexual feelings. The effect is that you lose your memory and become a vegetable. You can't read a book because you get to page 17 and have to go right back to page one again.”

—Lou Reed quoted in Please Kill Me -1996

More influential than most folks realize, his music will be missed.

                            Nelson Mandella RIP

A great man died today. The scale of his achievement is immense and remarkable and one of the few respected politicians.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela 18 July 1918 − 5 December 2013 was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997. Internationally, Mandela was the Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999.

Mandela served 27 years in prison, first on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. An international campaign lobbied for his release, which was granted in 1990 amid escalating civil strife. Becoming ANC President, Mandela published his autobiography and led negotiations with President F.W. de Klerk to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994, in which he led the ANC to victory. He was elected President and formed a Government of National Unity in an attempt to defuse ethnic tensions. As President, he promulgated a new constitution and initiated the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses.

He is an inspiration to all. His spirit of forgiveness was impressive and was South Africa’s salvation.

God rest his soul and keep him safe.
