For several reasosn I use microsoft office. But i know open office and it's really good.

For taking screenshots I suggest bandicam. It's free and you can even record the screen (10minutes in free version). The full version costs 33 Euro.

Great topic Jayc, I'm all for saving  money.

Ok, I have a question. I usually pay for Norton to protect my computer.  I have heard though that you can get just a good a product for free.  Is there any that anyone would recommend?

Miss Brandy… check with your internet provider… here in the USA, most internet providers provide a virus/malware protection free of charge.  Mine does, and it's a pretty good one, and not obtrusive.  Maybe it's the same in the UK.

I can tell you which one NOT to get.  DO NOT get AVG.  They put a little piece into your registry that you have to go in and remove yourself.  The uninstaller will remove everything but that one piece, leaving AVG on your computer.

One of my favorites free programs is GIMP, for image editing… free and very useful.  Also, Paint.Net is good, too.

GLC Player is great for 3d rendering and modeling.

Bandicam is for free but you can also have a better version, which has to be payed. It's the same with Avira!

@ Brandy: Use Avira, as hb mentioned. There are several versions, but the free one is enough. It's always tested as one of the best anti virus software.

I was using Open Office last year but I changed to
Google Drive. They really revamped it.(spell checking, grammar) I find it comparable to MS Office.  And my documents are in the cloud but I can still save them to a PC.
But it doesn't tie me to a particular PC to work on a story. (we got 3 PC's) so I can go to any of them to write.
