August 9, 2014 at 2:55 pm #138989You might want to think twice if someone offers you a cup of this coffee when you pop round to their house. Kopi Luwak is the rarest, most expensive gourmet coffee in the world. Sounds divine right? It’s actually made from the excrements of an Indonesian cat-like creature called the Luwak.
The Luwak eats only the ripest coffee cherries but its stomach can’t digest beans inside them, so they come out whole. The coffee that results from this process is said to be like no other, and the stomach acids and enzymes that perform the fermentation of the beans give the coffee a special aroma.
This process takes place on the islands of Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi in the Indonesian Archipelago. With an expensive price tag of anywhere between US$120 – $300 per pound, you might want to start saving now if you want to try this gourmet coffee. The most horrifying part of this post is ….
Unfortunately the countries who sell this have seen the value and now farm the Luwak , keeping them in tiny cages or small compounds. They feed them on purely coffee beans & that is not supposed to be their only diet. It eventually makes them sick having sich a restricted diet … but thats ok, there other wild ones to catch at the moment..
They are lone creatures so fight with each other in the compounds. Of course that doesnt matter because getting the coffee to the rich folk who pay is all that mattersYeah, you enjoy that coffee and smile at how its made… then think of the suffering of those Lumaks. Makes my blood boil.
Boycott it.

Pill Bugs / Wood lice
Those little roly poly bugs, some say, taste like shrimp. Boil or sauté in butter. In his 1885 book Why Not Insects, Vincent Holt wrote about pill bugs, stating “I have eaten these, and found that, when chewed, a flavour is developed remarkable akin to that so much appreciated in their sea cousins. Wood-louse sauce is equal, if not distinctly superior to, shrimp.”
Bon appétit!
